If God puts something in the Bible 69 times, like he does when he addresses thankfulness, we better take note and apply it to how we live. Unfortunately, the only time of year we focus on being thankful is right before we dive into the turkey and stuffing.

A common misconception is that thankfulness is congruent with good things happening in our life. We see status updates like, “Praise God! We closed on our dream home!” or “Thank the Lord, our puppy made a full recovery from surgery!” But according to I Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” This means we are to celebrate thanksgiving in the good times and bad.

Another misconception is that thankfulness is an easy exercise. Most people think of thankfulness as a list of their blessings. However, Psalm 50:14 says “Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God…” Sacrifice means it costs you something. At first this is confusing. How can thankfulness be a sacrifice? But when you think about how we give thanks to God, it makes perfect sense. You are thankful to God through your prayers, praise, obedience, and giving of material possessions. Giving God these things is certainly a sacrifice.

So take a moment today to truly think about what you're thankful for, regardless of your circumstances, and commit to finding a way, through prayer, praise, obedience, and giving to say thank you to your Savior.
