“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” -Matthew 8:23-27

Two of my all-time favorite worship songs are Oceans by Hillsong and You Make Me Brave by Bethel. The meanings of these songs are seen and felt in Matthew 8:23-27.

Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander (Oceans) because you make me brave you call me out beyond the shore into the waves (You Make Me Brave). The Lord leads us deeper and deeper from our comfort and wide path onto a more narrow and mysterious one. Sometimes these unexplored waters seem scarier and more intimidating then what we would like, but God is growing us. Our faith will be made stronger (Oceans) as the waters get deeper. He will never forsake us (You Make Me Brave), for He will make us brave.

He will never push us past what we can handle. For He commands the winds and waves. Have hope! For He lead the disciples into a lake, knowing a storm would come, and in showing His power, He rebuked the storm.

God will never let the waves drown us. He is in control of everything. So next time things seem scary as the waves are crashing down on us and we can no longer see the shore…remember this: even the wind and waves obey Him.

Christian Fisher is eighteen years old and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. However, her heart lies wherever there are tall skyscrapers and sidewalks overflowing with people. Her first love is her Lord and Savior. She has given Him her every move and waits on Him daily to whisper into her heart (even though sometimes it sounds more like a roar). Christians second love is coffee, preferably in a cozy café with towers of Bible commentaries spread out on the top of the table. Christian is a bit sassy but passionate in spreading the love of God to everyone she encounters.
