Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread (Matthew 6:11)

My daughters love homemade bread. As it bakes, our entire house smells fabulous until, at last, a perfectly domed, golden loaf emerges. While the bread is healthy and I made it for them, as their mother I simply cannot allow them to eat the entire loaf in an afternoon as they try to do. I love them, but I know it’s not good for them to have all at once.

The same is true of our Heavenly Father. God’s daily bread of provision so often comes in slices, even crumbs at times. And while our needs may be met today, the uncertainty of the future can weigh on our hearts. We yearn to see the bigger picture, we seek answers, we want more.

Yet, Jesus said, “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” (Matthew 6:26-27)

So today, instead of resenting the crumbs of God’s provision as evidence of incompletion, let’s begin to see each one as benchmarks of God’s work in progress in our lives, rejoicing in His faithfulness.
