I love the story of Samuel and the Lord in the Bible (1 Samuel 3:1-21). Samuel is lying in bed in the middle of night when he hears a voice call out his name. He runs to Eli’s room, thinking it was him, only to be sent away. Again Samuel hears the voice and returns to Eli. This happens once more until Eli realizes it is the Lord calling out to Samuel. Samuel goes back to bed under the instructions to answer back to the voice, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening". He does this and the Lord answers.

The Lord speaks to us. He calls out our names to get our attention. Has this happened to you? It has to me several times and like Samuel, I think it is something else. It is so easy for us to do this; to get confused about who is calling us- the world or the Spirit. However, it is so nice to have that person in our lives that pulls us back close to Jesus.

Do you have a person in your life that points you in the right direction? Maybe you are an Eli to someone in your own life?

That’s what I want to focus on in this story; Eli. The person that helped Samuel find his way to God. As believers, we all need a group or community of people constantly pointing us back to God. They’re accountability partners. People we can lean on when we can’t do it on our own.

I encourage each of you to find an Eli in your lives. Pray with them and seek God together. Lean on each other and remind each other of who the Voice belongs to that is calling out your name.

Christian Fisher is eighteen years old and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. However, her heart lies wherever there are tall skyscrapers and sidewalks overflowing with people. Her first love is her Lord and Savior. She has given Him her every move and waits on Him daily to whisper into her heart (even though sometimes it sounds more like a roar). Christians second love is coffee, preferably in a cozy café with towers of Bible commentaries spread out on the top of the table. Christian is a bit sassy but passionate in spreading the love of God to everyone she encounters.
