Reading about Jesus’ death makes my spirit tense- from the trial, to the scourging, to the cross. It’s why my soul leaps come Easter Sunday. Finally! We can think about the triumphant Resurrection. But all of Scripture is profitable for study, even the gruesome parts

In reading through the Gospel of Mark, I came to appreciate a once-uncomfortable verse:

And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.  - Mark 15:20 (ESV)

I cringe to see others shamed. I remember crying as a girl because another kid was getting teased on the playground. Because of this discomfort, I have always rushed through accounts of Jesus being mocked. But in my recent studies, I have been able to come to a new appreciation of this part of the Story. Not only did Jesus pay the penalty of sin with His body, He also absorbed the shame of sin on is back. Because Christ covered both the consequence and the guilt of sin, we walk in freedom from humiliation and blame. Our response to sin should not be more wallowing, but glad repentance and love-fueled obedience.

Love the Savior who redeemed you by walking in His ways.
