There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. -Romans 8:1-2 (ESV)

Two laws. One that reads sin and death, one that reads life. We are all subject to one or the other: death or life. The millisecond God breathes His Spirit into our dry bones, we are “set free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” We often think of laws as mechanisms which keep us bound; these verses speak of a law which keeps us free. Shackles cast off. Prison doors open. The death penalty lifted off of our heads. A man in my church recently said to me that we often talk about grace, without remembering the grave situation from which grace saved us. It’s not pleasant to think about our hopeless past, but it’s important to understand how the Gospel plays out in our lives. Condemnation that was deservedly ours, became Christ’s. He was crushed by a weight that should have come down on us. The death we should have died, He died. Isn’t grace truly amazing? Those of us in Christ Jesus now have no dark cloud of punishment hanging over our heads. We have only the Spirit of life within us, enabling us to live obedient, fruitful, worshipful lives. Meditate on this beautiful truth. Thank God for the Gospel. Respond in faith.
