Daily Delight

As I write this devotional, I am heavily pregnant with my second child. I think my belly can't get any rounder, then it does. I no longer walk, I lumber. This little life makes her presence known, kicking at my sides as if to say, "Hi Mom! I'll see you soon." There is a reason Paul compared anticipating new creation to anticipating the birth of a child.

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. - Romans 8:22-23 (ESV)

There are only a few things we can know for certain about birth: it will happen and a baby will come from it. We don't know day or time (often to the angst of many!), how long it will take, or how it will unfold. What we do know is that birth produces babies. I know that my unborn child is with me even now, and I know that after I deliver her she will be with me in an even more real way.

I love that we can be confident God's plans to renew creation are so sure. A new Heaven and new Earth is coming. We are already made new, and after Christ comes that newness will be even more vibrant. God's plans to renew creation have been in place for eternity.

Our role? Wait. Be vigilant. Prepare. Get your hospital bag ready, as it were. We are equipped with the Holy Spirit to wait well. Groan with the rest of creation, and take great joy that our groaning is not in vain.
