As I opened my birthday gift, I found that I was holding the most beautiful journal. Soft leather that looked worn and soft pages ready to be filled with the words of my heart. I immediately opened it and turned to the first page. My eyes filled with tears because the first few pages were written in my husband’s beautiful handwriting. On those pages, he gave me a glimpse into his heart that I will always treasure.

In that moment, I was flooded with the realization that as humans, we carry our past mistakes around like pack mules. It breaks our bones and finds its way into our present happiness. It’s like a fungus that we can’t get to go away. It’s a nightmare we can’t wake up from.

The next moment brought me to a memory I will forever have locked away in my heart. I sat on a couch surrounded by several other girls at bible study. One of my spiritual giants spoke words that I will never forget: “We are saints.”

She’s right. We are saints. We have been washed in the blood of Christ. We have been redeemed for our past mistakes. We have gained an inheritance of eternal life with our Creator. We are chosen. We are slathered in grace and mercy. We bear the name of Christ, which makes us more than conquerors over the mistakes of this life.

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints of light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. –Colossians 1:11-14

While we endure and heal from our past mistakes, may we move forward in joy and thankfulness that we have found forgiveness of our sins and immense love in the Father’s arms. This world tries to remind us daily and bully us with past sins. But, we have strength, we have been given life in Him.

We are saints.
