Romans 8:28 has been a comfort to believers for many years. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (ESV) Another way to phrase the truth proclaimed here is "glorifying God in all things is always good." Being called "according to His (God's) purpose" means being called to make much of Him. That is

God's purpose: to glorify Himself.

It is always good for us when God looks magnificent. So all things in our lives - happy, sad, easy, hard - are directed towards the goal of making God look stunning. To look beautiful. But I would be foolish if I didn’t admit this truth can be difficult to apply. How do hardships like job loss, chronic illness, or death of loved ones work for our good? With divine help. Later on in Romans, Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit is praying for us (Romans 8:26). I have often told people I am praying for them, only to forget the commitment or, worse, halfheartedly pray. But Scripture tells us that a member of the Trinity, God Himself, is praying for us. With words even we can’t find to pray for ourselves. God is not only praying for us, but He is answering His own prayer with a resounding, “Yes!” Yes, God will give us help in weakness and God will make all things work out for our good. No life experience of ours is ever wasted. What a comfort; what a Savior!
