Some trials we face may not make sense. We may wonder what good could come out of our sufferings. How do we understand the trials God puts us through? And how can we have joy in the midst of adversity?

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.-Romans 5:3-5 (NIV)

The reason we can meet our hardships with joy is because we know they give us a chance to persevere. To persevere in what we do and what we believe so that we may become more like Jesus. And the hope at the end of the battle is complete. We can rest in knowing that our God will carry out all that He has promised. He is with us through our persevering, giving us the strength and the wisdom to endure. He has sealed us with His Holy Spirit, who guides us through every trial we face. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

We aren’t left alone to persevere, but we are strengthened through our persevering. It is the testing of our faith and the molding of our character.

However difficult the situation you are facing is, you can find peace and joy in understanding how God is working. When enduring that relationship that you find frustrating, or the work that you’re drowning in, or the tragedy that seems impossible to bear, know that God is with you and that through your suffering you will be refined. Know that you have a hope that is an anchor for your soul and when all gives way, God’s promises still stand. He will bring you to your destination where you will receive the crown of life.

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from Him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress; I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
He is my mighty rock, my refuge. - Psalm 62:5-7(NIV)
