God doesn’t always lead us down roads easily navigated. In fact, when we surrender to His will it is oftentimes the treacherous roads that we find ourselves on. I think there is a misconception that when we follow Jesus, everything is supposed to be smooth sailing, the trials are to hurt less, and the battle is to be a breeze. It’s not. Yes, Jesus told us to cast our cares upon Him, yes Jesus will deliver, yes He will be faithful and true and lead us in the way of everlasting, but not every day is going to be a piece of cake. It’s a human tendency to want to want to run away or hide when the going gets tough. It is those times where we plead with God for deliverance of normalcy to continue on in our comfort zones.

It is in the middle of our refining that we see our character being sharpened and strengthened through His Spirit.

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.  -Romans 5:1-5 (NKJV)

I’ve been challenged to not beg Him to get me out. I want my character to be refined, I want to be made more and more like Jesus. For God to accomplish this, there has to be the process of refinement. There has to be the chipping away at the person who is broken and fallen. We get to have hope no matter what trial comes up. We get to serve a risen King who doesn’t send us down the path alone or unequipped. The devil would want nothing more than for us to turn around and go back, to run, to hide, and to pick a different path. Don’t do it. Stay, pray and let Him change you from the inside out.
