For my New Years celebration I quickly jumped to the ideas of what to wear, where we were going, who was coming. I allowed myself to get worked up over earthly desires that I forgot to slow down and be thankful. I forgot to pay attention to God.

You can’t hear God if your mind is crowded with other thoughts or concerns. It’s hard to not take on too much, but if truth be told, most of us take on more than we can handle. The problem with taking on too much at one time is that we cannot enjoy what we are doing and even worse, we do not do the best job that we can because we feel dizzy from the whirlwind. God did not intend for us to take on the world all alone. It is His desire that we slow down, sit at His feet and do what He wants us to do.

Slow down. Take a deep breath. What’s the hurry? Why wear yourself out? Just what are you after anyway? But you say, ‘I can’t help it. I’m addicted to alien gods. I can’t quit.” -Jeremiah 2:25 (The MSG)

After getting worked up over my neglect I opened my journal and made a list of all the things I was thankful for in 2015 and I wrote myself a reminder: give yourself permission to slow down.
