Ash Wednesday commences the beginning of the Lenten season and honestly, it's one of my favorite times of the year. Not because I'm a church girl, but because any period where I am stretched spiritually always makes me better. Lent is a chance to recalibrate ourselves. We should recall our commitment to our community, recall our passion for justice, recall our decision to know and follow Jesus. For those of you convicted to "give up" something, you go! Let's also remember the kind of fasting described in Isaiah 58 for us... (Verses 5-9)

Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humblethemselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothethem, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

What if we actually lived like this? What a world that would be! To share our food with the hungry... To clothe the naked... To NOT turn away from our own flesh and blood... Imagine it, girls. Let's not only imagine it this season though, let's actually live like it. Who's with me?
