In the story of the adulterous woman (John 8:1-11), I am tempted to ask: Jesus let her go just like that?Scot-free?No rhetorical questions to stir up her guilt? No condemnation?

Nothing but forgiveness.

At times I feel like the adulterous woman, though instead of having others pin me down and condemn me, it usually is my own thoughts that drown me in guilt.“How could I do that?I do not deserve any good thing.”As I wallow in this sorrow, I end up drawing further away from my Father. Rather than focus on the Son, I focus on my sin. I end up creating my own qualifications for my right standing with God and easily exchange the truth for the lies that the ‘father of lies’ subtly plants in my heart. However, “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the East is from the West, so far has he removed our transgressions from us," (Psalm 103:11-12).

We are the woman caught in sin and set to be stoned for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. As we look up to face judgement, we find Jesus standing there giving us grace. We look to the cross and see not just another second chance, but a whole new life. A forgotten past and glorious destiny ahead. I am forgiven, free and forever loved. And you are, too.
