"I am no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God." For so long I sung these words in the chorus of ‘No Longer Slaves’ by Bethel Music, yet I was not sure of what they really meant. I am familiar with fear, though. That desperate look of doubt when one asks “Can I really make it?” Or, the moment when logic seems to overrule faith; being able to walk on water versus laws of Physics negating the very possibility of this. The world keeps me hostage to its ideologies, in bondage to fear: False Evidence Appearing Real.

Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father," (Romans 8:14-15, NIV).

Freedom from fear is where I am meant to be as a child of God, yet I am still bound in chains. I act like an insecure child with a mean father who threatens to disown them. This indeed is False Evidence Appearing Real. The truth, however, is that our Father has an incomparable love for us.

We are His daughters, formerly slaves to sin and fear, but now slaves to righteousness with an inheritance of eternal life. So the next time fear knocks at my door, it will have my identity inChrist to contend with.

I am no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God!
