The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing. -Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV)
Every time I read these words, the same thing happens. Mentally, I pause in disbelief and look over my shoulder to see if God was pointing at the person behind me. I look back at Him quizzically, point at myself and ask, “Who? Me? You are singing loudly over me?”
The whole thing is a comedy routine that God and I have going, because though His answer is a serious and sincerely emphatic “Yes, you!” He rolls His eyes at me as He is saying it. To Him, there is no one else He could possibly be talking about. Of course, it is me!
I adore this conversation with my Father, and I am positive He adores this conversation with me.
His words are disarming. They are the safe haven of a sweet hug and a kiss on the forehead. They are a quiet and tender chat on a porch swing with a cup of coffee. And also, somehow, they are a loud burst of laughter with your best friend - the kind that eventually loses its sound, makes your shoulders shake, your nostrils flare, and squeezes tears from the outside corners of your eyes.
Pure joy.
When I think of these words, I cannot help but turn them back to Him! It is like falling love. I rejoice over Him with gladness too! I will exult over Him with loud singing too! Though He made me, it is like we have discovered each other for the first time. Yet, because He made me, we are old friends.
Do you know that He sees you? Do you know that He is singing loudly over you? He loves you and can’t get enough of you.
Take joy in being His daughter. He certainly takes joy in being your Father.
