The Biblical story of the Israelites sounds a lot like the world narrative right now: There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgement of God in the land. There is only cursing, lying, murder, stealing, murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. - Hosea 4:1-2 (NIV)

Contrary to the usual Easter narrative, my church’s drama team acted out the story of Hosea. I struggled to understand how God’s first instruction to him was, “Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness.” Surely that was too tough a call to obedience! Yet as the play unfolded, I saw that the unconditional love Hosea was called to have for Gomer is nothing close to that He has for us, a broken and wayward people. I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them. I will be like dew to Israel; he will blossom like a lily. -Hosea 14:4-5 (NIV)

A message that resounds throughout history, the pinnacle of it being at the cross; love. God does not find lovely people and then love them. His love is not a reaction-it is a creation. Our God does not sit by sharpening a spear, writing our names upon it as a focal point of dreaded determination-No! He has written our names on the palm of His hand; the same hand that took the nails for us.

Jesus satisfies God’s wrath toward sin through His sacrifice and now, where forgiveness is least deserved, we have it as a free gift forever. Indeed, love conquers everything!
