Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly -Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

So many mornings I wake up and start my day out of habit. I reach over to grab my phone for the alarm, and then almost instantaneously check my email, Facebook, Instagram, the weather—you name it. The mindless scrolling is both a tactic to lie in bed for another five minutes, and also a bad habit that I have unintentionally allowed to become my norm.

After I climb out of bed, my busy day has officially begun and rarely do I stop until my little one has finally gone to bed. Many days, I feel the mundane schedule and the tiresome hours of motherhood creeping over me. At the end of the day, it is not uncommon for me to feel so worn out and drained of every ounce of my energy. By the end of the week, I feel emotionally, physically, and spiritually exhausted. I need a break. I need renewed energy and a refreshed mind. But the realities of motherhood, though the days are beyond joyful, tell me that I don’t get a weekend “off…” my duties of being a mother do not stop.

Where do I invite God into all of this? If I am honest, there are many days that I do not invite His presence into my mornings when I start my day. I go through all of the motions, and though I pray often, I forget to let my heart and mind rest on His spiritual food. When I do catch myself mindlessly scrolling in the mornings, I switch gears. I allow my mind to soak in something that is far more rejuvenating, and can change my entire perspective on my day. Intentionally starting my day off in the presence of the Lord is not something I am always good at, but the importance of feeding on His word before feeding on social media, or even physical food, is made so evident in my heart and mind when my focus at the end of the day is filled with thankfulness and blessing rather than the long days and nights of little sleep and constant running.

God’s spiritual food gives us wisdom, a renewed and wholesome mind, and a calm spirit. Starting our day with His word first shifts our entire focus for the day that lies ahead of us. What things are you feeding on when you first open your eyes in the morning?
