The pain my husband and I felt when we miscarried our first baby was insurmountable. We had a raw, deep wound that without Christ’s strength, could not heal. The excitement and anticipation of this baby brought daydreams of being a mom, his little nose and the creases in his hands, what he would grow up to be, the color of his hair.

When we found out we were losing our baby, we prayed God would perform miracles. We prayed believing. We prayed He would spare us from the agonizing pain of losing the life growing inside of me that we dreamt of meeting on this side of heaven.

When God didn’t save our baby, we wept, and we praised Him. The pain was so great, but God’s grace and strength was even greater. Our hearts were broken, but God’s peace was surpassing.

In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul. -Psalm 138:3 (NKJV)

God doesn’t always change our circumstances. But in the midst of our challenges, He gives us the strength to face our hardships with grace, and holds our hand as we walk through them. Even in the hurt and tears, we can truly say, “and if not, He is still good.” Amen.
