As your read this it’s been one week from the mass shooting in Orlando. But as I’m writing this, I have been watching the press conferences surrounding the event. It’s being called the largest mass shooting in America. 50 victims. One reporter is saying that based on the number of people in the club and the number of casualties, if you were there, you had a one in 6 chance of dying. My heart is breaking. I imagine God’s heart must be breaking too.

I don’t know what facts about the suspect or the shooting will emerge by the time you are reading this, but I do know my mind and my heart will never be able to grasp what could drive an individual to commit such a crime.

All I know to do is pray.

Lord, heal our broken hearts. Heal our broken nation and our broken communities. As we struggle to make sense of this tragedy, help us to seek You rather than to seek vengeance. Help us to love our neighbors, regardless of their differences, as we love ourselves. Show us how to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the face of tragedy. Help us to not be afraid but to live our lives boldly, sharing and showing Your love as we walk together on this earth. Lord, heal our broken hearts.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. -Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
