I have the privilege of nannying the cutest four-year-old boy, Paxton. He is joy, love, grace, strength, and perseverance like I have never seen before. He has the cutest hipster haircut, determined blue eyes, a laugh that seeps joy into your heart, and Down syndrome. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Paxton receives physical therapy on a horse on a weekly basis. He is required to balance on a horse in various positions as the horse walks around the track. The work is challenging and scary for Pax. When he began hippotherapy, he would cry and squeeze onto the horse for dear life. Sitting up tear-free was a win in the first couple weeks.

Recently, the therapist readied Pax for the next pose and told him he would stand on the horse. You could tell from across the room he wanted no part in it. I listened to him cry and fight to stay in an easy sitting position as his therapist helped him to his feet.

As I watched him stand on a moving horse while crying and holding onto his therapist’s hand, I was overwhelmed with love for him. As I watched him struggle and fear and cry, but hold onto his support and continue to push through, I was so proud of him. I didn’t watch and wish he wouldn’t struggle. I didn’t wish he wasn’t afraid. I understood his fear and struggle, and loved him more because of it.

And in that moment I saw a glimpse of how God views me. How he views you. When God calls us to new and scary tasks, He understands the fear and hears our cries. But as we stand up in the fear and take the step He is calling us to, God is so pleased and delighted in us. He is not disappointed in how you’re standing up. He just wants you to stand. He is your support as you stand. And He never expects you to do it on your own.

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. -Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)
