Beauty From Ashes // Spiritually Fit Day 3

Saturday, July 16, 2016

I was sitting on the floor in the dark, candlelight dancing across the dark walls. I felt weak but my heart was reaching, searching, calling for Jesus.

Begging for Him to change me.

The past week I had been starving myself literally from food. I had tried convincing myself a “juice cleanse” was necessary to stop the binge eating I had developed since moving overseas to China just months prior. I wasn’t in my right mind, and the enemy played off my emotions to pull me into self-destructive behavior.

Weak, feeble, swallowed by darkness.

But out of the darkness came light.

Jesus pulled me up from the pit and mire.

He found me and planted me on firm ground.

He reached through the despair of my heart to give me His
.

He told me then a message I have carried in my heart to this day that radically transformed me:

I love you. I LOVE you. I love YOU."

God’s heart to chase the lost lamb is true.

He loves me. He loves you.

It sounded so simple growing up in church, but then when I was tested, when I was sinking, I found it to be the sweetest lifeline of oxygen to my deprived-lungs. Which is exactly what has led me here to the point in my life where my greatest weaknesses, my greatest insecurities have become the field to which He’s given me purpose to sow the seed of Truth.

I am an online fitness coach and blogger.

Ironic, right?

How a girl who literally starved herself and went on to have patterns of binge-eating for years could serve in such a capacity, but isn’t that our God? He takes the least of these. He uses us. For His Glory’s sake.

It wasn’t until this past year that I saw the beautiful pattern God had been weaving in my story. And this is when I realized my message was to share to all who might listen the hope that I found back in that lonely, dark but Jesus-filled apartment in China, “God loves you.”

And because He loves you, it’s important for our spiritual health to also care for our physical health. I have learned firsthand how the way we treat our physical health and being directly affects our spiritual health. Rick Warren says it simply, “God created it, Jesus died for it, the Holy Spirit lives in it, I’d better take care of it.” And I just love that! It’s so true!

The girl broken on the floor slowly starving herself was in no condition to be focused on the mission field. She was inward focused on how she was feeling and looking. She didn’t look in the mirror and see God’s creation. She looked in the mirror and simply saw flaws, insecurities, hate. This does not bring glory to God. By choosing to mistreat or misuse the bodies we’ve been given, we hurt our testimonies and opportunity to be used in the lives of those around us.

We need to understand that it matters how we treat our bodies. There is more to healthy living than we think.

1 Timothy 4:8 says, “For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

Surrendering our physical health into the hands of the Holy Spirit gives us the opportunity to go deeper into godliness. By treating our bodies with respect and honor, we become more available to the disposal of God’s purpose being carried out in the lives of those around us. It also extends the length and quality of our life and service of God because we’ve done well to care for the bodies He’s given us. Daily exercise, healthy eating is not just for a certain pant size; it’s a spiritual act of worship that brings glory to God!

God has transformed my heart and my approach to my body and my nutrition. He has given me a passion to share this truth through my ministry and business www.sownwithstrength.com so that I can encourage women to see themselves the way God sees them and to help them get healthy for the Glory of God! If you’re looking for help to find balance with your nutrition and fitness, I would love to help you… sownwithstrength@gmail.com
