For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. -1 John 5:4 (ESV)
I was catching up with an old friend recently and I recounted some advice that her mother had given me years ago. She would say that if you are struggling with a decision and you’ve thought and prayed about it and asked God for a sign but don’t see a clear one, when you finally do come to a decision, you’ve got to believe that was God. My friend said she had made many decisions according to that advice and has shared it with a lot of people over the years but that was the first time it had been recounted to her. She went on to say that life is a crapshoot – sometimes you hit the mark, sometimes you don’t. It’s no reflection on your or you or your self-worth. Whatever happens, consider it a gift.
I think this is the real beauty of a Christian life. Not that it’s easy and not that we always get clear answers to our questions and prayers, but that our self-worth is not defined by our decisions or our life here on earth, but by our relationship with Christ. Only when we define ourselves in Christ can we consider whatever happens to be a gift. Because there are plenty of things that will come along in this life that feel like anything but a gift. Only in hindsight – and honestly, sometimes not even then – can we consider some things a gift. The real gift is that Christ overcame this world and because we are in Him, we will overcome this world as well. Our problems, our anxieties, even our victories here on earth are temporary, but our life in Him is eternal. As you begin this week, I encourage you to reflect on that and consider whatever happens to be a gift.
