I had the honor of watching one of my best friends get married this past weekend.

As their first act as a married couple, my sweet friends took part in receiving communion and then went into a time of worship. The bridal party joined alongside them, lifting up praise for the good thing Jesus was doing and the wonder of community filled the air. Right before my eyes I looked on in awe at the Bride and the Bridegroom communing in harmony with their community, just as Jesus did as He communed with His bride (the church) at the last supper. There it was: the modern depiction of communion on display!

The words the officiant spoke just before they took part in communion rang so true in that moment for me.

He spoke about how moving it was that in Jesus' last moments, He didn't choose to spend them healing another person, giving another sermon, or performing another miracle. But He spent His last moments doing something so human. He spent them having a meal with his best friends. Jesus' life wasn't all about doing miraculous things as much as it was about the people He was doing those miraculous things with and for.

Jesus longs for us to know how valuable it is to live and commune with one another. Which is why I believe we still practice communion in the church today. Not just to remember who Jesus is but also to remember who we are in our community and who our community is in us. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. -John‬ ‭17:21-23‬ (‭NLT‬‬)
