I was in a dear friend’s wedding this past weekend and it was a wonderful celebration of life and love – and I’m not just referring to the relationship between the bride and the groom.

During the ceremony, they had a “community moment” where they asked everyone, from the wedding party to all of the guests, to join hands in unity and the officiant asked everyone to proclaim “I will” if we vowed to support them in their marriage. It was a touching moment and beautiful reminder that we are all on this journey together and the real reason we are here is to help and encourage one another.

I looked at the bride and at several of her other attendants and was reminded how blessed I am to be on this journey with each of them. We met freshman year of college and have been in each other's lives ever since. We’ve seen each other through dating, breakups, marriages, divorces, births, family illness, family deaths, job changes, cross country moves and most every other life milestone that occurs from age 18 to early 30’s. We’ve helped pull each other out of the depths of sorrow and rejoiced together when any one of us was on life’s mountaintop. The years haven’t always been easy, but we’ve managed to laugh more than cry and find a way to walk though this life together. Along with my family, it is these women who have taught me the real meaning of community. For that, I am grateful.

God meant for us to live in community - to help one another stay the course and to walk through life’s journey together. This week, go into the world and be an encouragement to one another.

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (New Living Translation)
