Imagine a beautiful home. It’s large and inviting with a big porch. On the land surrounding the home are lots of trees — perfect for climbing. There’s a beautiful vegetable garden and lots of flowers of every variety. There’s also a fence lining the edge of the lawn.
The fence has been painted perfectly, and looks as new as if it had been put in yesterday. Its location is right where it needs to be because just outside the fence is a slope that quickly goes down and deep fast.

The builder of the home put the fence right in its rightest and safest spot to keep its tenants safe. The tenants might have accidentally wandered off and down that slope if the fence hadn’t been put there. Especially at night if it was a dark night, or even during the day if they weren’t paying close attention.

I think about this little analogy as I consider Psalm 16 which contains a couple of my favourite verses. The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. -Psalm 16:5-6 (ESV)

In the beginning God drew the most absolutely pleasant boundary lines. He was specific to Adam and Eve about what was allowed and what wasn’t. They would live forever with Him if they lived within the boundary lines He had drawn for them.

We live in a different time and world now, with sin always around us and accessible in an alluring way. Yet! The Lord has still drawn pleasant boundary lines around us and the inheritance is still true because we get to know Him! We get to be known by Him! And day by day and minute by minute we get closer to seeing God face to face. We will be with Him again!

Here’s my favourite thing about the boundary lines: the limit is for our joy. They limit us in a way and yet truly, they allow us to live. When we live within the lines the Lord has drawn for us, we get to live in freedom because inside His boundary lines is the most pleasant places to ever exist.
