Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. -(Proverbs 13:12, NIV)

I’m sure you have experienced the truth behind that statement. The pain, the disappointment, and the confusion of hope deferred, what can feel like hope denied.
Hope in the deepest sense is a longing for someone or something. It can become a slippery slope when it is placed in the wrong person or thing. Unfulfilled longings inevitably lead to disappointment and pain and will always be a reality on this side of heaven.
Hope is something we do, a verb, and something we possess, a noun.

Psalm 130:7 (NLT):
O Israel, hope in the Lord; for with the Lord there is unfailing love. His redemption overflows.

Jeremiah17:7 (NLT):
But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.

Not only does God call us to live in hope, to live with longings and desires that ultimately point to Him, but also He tells us that He alone should be our hope, the One we long for. When Jesus is the outcome and the object of our waiting and expectation we are blessed.
The only longing that will sustain us, strengthen us, and not disappoint us is a longing for more of Jesus. It’s the only longing we can be sure of. And God loves to show up in that longing and fulfill that hope. That hope will hold us.

Hebrews 6:19 (NIV): We have this hope as an anchor for our souls, firm and secure
