Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. -1 Thess. 5:18 (NIV)

All circumstances. Give thanks in any and every thing that comes our way. The good, the bad, the ugly. Giving thanks when things in my life are going great, that makes sense to me. But giving thanks in the midst of life’s valleys seems forced and inauthentic. How do we give thanks when we are living paycheck to paycheck and can’t seem to hardly breathe. When that relationship we thought would last suddenly ends in heart break. When we feel overlooked and underappreciated at work. When we bang our hip on the kitchen counter and its feels like we’ve been shot. (Seriously, the worst). It makes so much more sense to mope and pout when life’s circumstances get us down. And who would blame you for it? But check out the second part of the verse. For this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (NIV). The Message says This is the way God wants you who belong in Christ Jesus to live. (MSG). As Christians we belong in Christ and because of that God desires for us to live a life steeped in thankfulness. And that makes me think there is a greater reason for this command. Giving thanks at all times is not about pretending that things are not difficult. Giving thanks changes our perspective on our circumstances and creates within in us a spirit of gratitude. When someone we love gets sick, we can praise God knowing that He is the Healer of not only our physical bodies but our souls as well. When people hurt us, we can thank God for the chance to forgive as we have been forgiven. Gratitude isn’t about changing our circumstances, it’s about changing our hearts. The only way that we can find the strength to praise at all times is through Jesus Christ. Through Christ we are able to give thanks regardless of what we are going through because we know who we belong to. Our world may be a series of ups and downs but Christ is always steady and there for us to cling to. Praise God for that.
