The Olympics come to a close today. I love how they seem to bring our country together, in an election year that has been, to say the least, controversial. My favorite sport to watch is women’s gymnastics, and like most people, I have become a big fan of Simone Biles, who won four (four!) gold medals in her first Olympics. I was reading an article this past week that said she did not win the five that many expected her to. Her coach, however, has always told her that “Other people’s expectations are not your responsibility.” Did you catch that? Other people’s expectations are not your responsibility.

How often do you take on other people’s expectations? For me, it’s often. Sometimes, I don’t even realize I’m doing it and it becomes hard to distinguish others’ expectations from my own, and even from God’s. And what are his expectations? He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. -Micah 6:8 (NIV)

When others’ expectations on you become too great, return to His — Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly.
