Jesus replied, "'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Matthew 22: 37-39 (NLT).

I love the simplicity of this verse! Above all over things we are to love God with everything we have and after that, love one another as ourselves. Seems easy enough. But I think sometimes we flip these two around without even realizing it. We focus on loving others more than loving God. Being a worker for God is such an important thing but being a lover of God is the utmost thing. We can spend so much of our time trying to make Jesus known to those around us that we neglect to know Him ourselves. What's this look like played out? Well, my to-do list right now is out. of. control. I am a teacher and tomorrow dozens of students will file into my classroom and I want to be ready. My days have been spent figuring out how to make sure each of my students sees and feels the love of God in my classroom. And that is a good thing to want. But in the midst of getting all of these things done, I've been putting off spending time with God. As I feel His pull to draw near within me I am filled with excuses to why I can't be still and love Him. "Don't you see all the things I'm trying to do for you God?" I start to look and sound a lot like Martha in Luke 10:41-42. Focused on many things but forgetting the best thing: to love my Lord with everything I've got. He is our own thing. So if you're like me and have gotten caught up in a list of things to do remember this, we are lovers of God first and workers for Him second.
