One of the most rewarding parts of working in an elementary school is witnessing the joy and anticipation of children as they begin a new school year. They scurry in on the first day, eager to grasp new beginnings and knowledge. There’s a clean slate – a new chapter is in front of them. And in spite of not knowing what the year will bring, they skip joyfully into their journey.

Jesus intentionally uses children to demonstrate attributes that can help us navigate our adult lives. Somewhere along the tainted path to adulthood, we begin pairing unexpected change with pessimism. What if we applied the teachable attitude of children to our adult struggles? What if we approached the ambiguous, new chapters of our lives with elation- waiting eagerly to see what God wants to teach us? Truly, I say unto you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like a child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, (Matthew 18: 3-4, ESV).

Jesus reminds us of the value of humbling ourselves before Him. We will be given inevitable tests - listening to Him, obeying Him when we don’t understand His logic, and allowing Him to mold us. A child is teachable because they respect the wisdom of those who are teaching them. They may not always understand the “why”, but they obey until they can conceptualize how the directions are in their best interest. Are we respecting the wisdom of our all-knowing God? I don’t know what area of your life is requiring you to sit, wait, and learn with a positive attitude, but I know that it is not a cakewalk. I challenge us all to choose excitement over dread, trust over doubt, obedience over running, and eagerness over reluctance. Take notes and soak up knowledge as God does the teaching. He wants for us to pass these small tests, before we can be promoted to the next chapter of our lives. What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand, (John 13:7, ESV).
