There we sat- my friend and I, sipping coffee and exchanging life updates. There is something freeing about transparency- sharing your heart and the rough patches in your story, and knowing it will be received with love and returned with reassurance. My sweet friend poured her heart out about feeling “less than”. Criticism from her boss. Rejection from co-workers. Frustration with caring for her sick mother. Inadequacy from not meeting the expectations of others. Guilt for feeling like God has turned a blind eye to her struggles. “You seem so carefree, like you don’t let those kinds of things bother you,” she said. I chuckled. “Don’t be fooled. I stress over inadequacy just like every woman that is human. Then I realize I am growing tired, trying to please everyone. So I have to keep perspective.”

I will never be able to win a race with human “enough-ness” as the goal. When one person is pleased with my performance, another person will be dissatisfied. Chasing security in people’s approval is tiring. Do you want to know the secret formula for peace in the midst of our insecurities? – Jesus. The goal we should be focused on is living a life that is pleasing to our Heavenly Father. This is the only race that we can win, because Jesus won it already. He gives us salvation – not based off of what we do, but what He did when he died on the cross. When Satan sneaks his way into our hearts through the door of insecurity, we must remember that our performance will never be enough if it is based on human validation. If you have given your heart to Jesus, you have performed the only action that matters. The Lord values your heart- not your top-notch, perfect performance. Temporary affirmation from humans vs. eternal acceptance from Jesus Christ- Which will you choose to focus on? Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ, (Galatians 1:10).
