I had it all planned out. A list of venues, the style of dress, bridesmaid announcements, the perfect song for our first dance. There had been lots of big news in my life the past few years. Grad school successes, Master’s degree, starting a small business on Etsy. An engagement to the love of my life was surely the next life event to be excited about. Until the conversation that I anticipated would be about our imminent engagement turned out to be a breakup, instead. “Is this some cruel trick, God?” – It seemed unreal, a nightmare. Surely I would wake up and my heart would be magically mended, pieced back together to form the perfect picture that I had of my future. Nope- it never happened. In the days that proceeded, I questioned God’s plan. Why would He remove the godly relationship I prayed for? A relationship that honored Him at the center? Well God was interceding. Intercession just looked different than I had imagined.

In those days of what seemed like despair, God was making me a stronger servant- one that was ready to serve Him without distraction. My days were spent getting reacquainted with my first love- Jesus. Hanging on to the promises in His word, sweet conversations in prayer, drawing near to His warm embrace. “Use me in the midst of this”, I prayed. And He placed it on my heart to focus and write. My big announcement turned out to be publishing a book, not planning a wedding. It took the removal of someone I love to redirect me to the pursuit that God called me to. It is not my season to encourage a husband. God needs to use me to encourage a whole lot of women, first. Sister, He is there in the midst of your losses and rejections; your “no’s” and “not nows”. Allow Him to use your pain for a purpose as He prunes you. Like Priscilla Shrier says, a life disruption is really a divine intervention. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness, (James 1:2-4).
