You know how music has the power to invade, filling the room so that not one square unit can escape its touch? It comes in like a flood. Time stops and everything feels right: you’re listening to your favorite band in a huge stadium or blasting the best song in your bedroom. You try to bottle up the feeling of the moment so you can save it forever. But that feeling never has to come to an end. We can live in a state of feeling known and in awe for the rest of our lives. When God invades a room with His presence or your life with His voice, you can’t escape it. You can’t deny it. It overtakes you like a flood, and it stays.

There is nothing that stabilizes me like the voice and presence of God. He knows me from the inside-out and upside-down, and He does not withhold Himself. We have an all-access pass to His heart, to His overwhelming goodness, to His very thoughts toward us. And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people" (Exodus 13:21-22, ESV). This experience can be our experience!
I can’t say I’ve always been able to hear the Lord’s voice (that journey began in recent years), but I can say I’ve experienced His presence from an early age. My parents fought a lot growing up, and I would find myself alone in my room, scared yet strangely comforted. I knew Jesus was with me. He flooded my room, and He stayed. This ability to receive His presence and (now) recognize His voice has carried me through the most confusing and painful times.

If you haven’t experienced His sweet voice or His wonderful presence, I encourage you to ask Him to reveal them to you today. If you feel stuck, reach out to a friend or mentor or someone in this community. It’s never too late to experience this new depth of God, a depth that will change everything.
