Rain beat down on my car windows as I sang at the top of my lungs, music blaring. It had been a dismal day- physically and mentally. Work was busy, the nation was in an uproar. Every post I read and conversation I heard was pierced with an unsettling theme of discord. Staring the problems of the world in the face had proven to be just as unproductive as wishing they didn’t exist. So sitting there I found my solace- myself, my music, and the rain -the few things that seemed recognizable, consistent.

As I pulled up to a red light, I looked over to see who might be watching me sing and dance like an idiot. Two lanes over, another mini concert was occurring in a shabby, old work van. Singing at the top of their lungs and dancing their hearts out were two young men- a white man in the driver’s seat, a black man in the passenger seat. I smiled- partly at the reassurance that I am not alone in my weirdness, partly in wonder of their story. I don’t know if these two men were together by obligation or choice. But I recognized what I saw as refreshing unity – a stark contrast to the manifestation of race wars and division. Beneath my dark skin and my neighbor’s lighter skin, are human beings, all of whom were created in the image of God.

My mind wandered into an idealistic visualization of a peaceful society- one in which we choose to sing and dance together like idiots as we drive to our destinations. As the light turned green, my moment of daydreaming ended. I spiraled back down into the disheartening reality that mankind will continue to narrow our focus to differences, not similarities. And as we long as we do, we are all losing the battle, disregarding the real enemy, and creating an environment for him to thrive in his mission to kill, steal, and destroy. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms, (Ephesians 6:12).
