Do you ever feel like God is holding out on you? Keeping you from a good thing? Withholding the blessings that you think are meant for you? A “messy heart moment” - I like to call it. Those dark moments creep in and dim our lights. As Christians, we sometimes find ourselves becoming entangled in a nasty web of entitlement. We try to do all the “good, Christian things” in our walk to profess our love for the Lord. But if we take a moment to look beneath the surface, we will see an ugly truth festering deep within us. Expectations. We expect the Lord to reward us for our good behavior. We expect to receive His blessings and promises. We expect Him to work on our time.

When God’s delivery does not mirror the picture of our expectation, that attitude of entitlement kicks in. “God why can’t I just have this?” “God- why are those who do not love you reaping blessings that I feel are meant for me?” God is our Father. And let me assure you that every parent instinctively knows the motives of their children. Just like our parents reprimand us for our ungrateful attitudes, God hesitates to give us the desires of our hearts when our hearts are not in the right place. Ready for a heart check? Read James 4:3. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

We can’t hide behind our frustration with God. He searches our heart and knows all of our ways. He is waiting for us to delight in Him, genuinely, without expecting anything other than knowing that He will deliver what is best. God’s provision is our protection. So whatever he is “withholding” from you today - know that He is being intentional. Join me this week, in replacing messy heart expectations with heartfelt gratitude for whichever blessings He decides to grace us with. Praise Him for the ones He’s withholding, too. What appears to be a blessing, might really be a burden.
