A symphony is lingering in the air, an ode to autumn and all its magic. Leaves dance undertow as cars pass by. The crisp winds race through my curls, and my heart only grows warmer. Every new color is wild and enchanting. With the turning of every season, I find myself falling more and more in love with the world around me, with humanity, with movement and change and patience and stillness. As I fall deeper in love with these things, I fall deeper in love with their origin, all the way back to my first Love.

A new album from Jonathan David and Melissa Helser came out recently, and I have been captivated by one track in particular: “First Love." My heart's response to that song has inspired this post.

Jesus is relentless in His affection, in His changing us with perfect love. He was the first to love us and give us our significance. He was the first to forgive us, to hold our hands, to run with us and laugh with us and dance with us. He was the first one we truly loved, too. We made memories with Him before we ever set foot on this earth. My gratitude for Him runs deep, and I cannot help but find Him in the wind and the leaves and the clouds and the seas.

My appreciation for this life deepens and widens like a river finding its course and forging its path. Much of it feels given, appearing like a present in my heart. As He loves me, He deepens my capacity to love, to appreciate. Much of it I have chosen, making powerful decisions to cherish life. As He chooses me, He deepens my capacity to choose, to create, to bless.

I want my life to be one that is constantly falling further back into my first Love. I want my present appreciation for this magical new season to be the eternal state of my heart. Through every high and every low.

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. -1 John 4:18-19 (ESV)
