I am the epitome of a planner. Short-term or long term, I’m excited by it all. Planning for a major life event, vacation, or even just a date with friends ignites a fire in my heart. In the midst of planning a trip the other day, I realized that I need to focus more on the only plan that really matters- the plan for eternity. Jesus carried out His part of the plan, already. He made salvation accessible to us, through His sacrifice on the cross. But we still have work to do, my friend.

In our partnership with God, we must do our portion. I think we talk so much about “His grace being sufficient” that we sometimes end up taking advantage of it. We know that we serve a patient God, so we delay changing our hearts, repenting of our sins, correcting our ways. We will get it right- tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. What if we never get that opportune time we are waiting for? And what if in the midst of planning for our earthly promises, we lose grasp of our eternal promise? “Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this city or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, or make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, If it is the Lord’s will we will live and do this or that, (James 4:13-15).

The words of this scripture survey my heart and wreck me. Why am I more excited about planning things for my own pleasure -things that might fall through- than I am about planning to attain the one thing that is certain? I want to start focusing on the one plan that is perfect - God’s plan for mankind. I want to plan for the trip to my eternal destination, the place that houses blessed assurance- Heaven. Join me, this week, in trading some of our plans etched on the pages of a cute planner for plans that draw us nearer to the cross. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things, (Colossians 3:2).
