#GOALS - it’s the hashtag we see plastered on social media (and the one we may even be guilty of typing ourselves). There is a self-absorbed magnet that is pulling our generation closer to idolization and farther from Christ. I can’t help but wonder how much differently our lives would look if we followed Jesus the way we follow the human figures who have traits that we admire.

Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me,” (Matthew 16:24).

Denying ourselves includes denying our obsession with becoming more like our role models and perfecting our inner being to parallel His. Jesus had all of the traits that would warrant the compliment #goals. He was loving, patient, merciful, grace-giving, genuine, and kind. He was non-judgmental and met people where they were. He chose humble over haughty. And He was strong and bold in His pursuit of the Gospel. Satan whispers lies to us concerning what we should be. He distracts us from our mission with the things he knows are appealing to us. The next thing you know, earthly things are dressed up in a pretty little package and delivered to our brains as idols. We have to do less scrolling down a feed and timeline and do more dropping to our knees to pray. That perfect looking person, that perfect looking relationship, that perfect looking reality is distracting us from the One who is truly perfect.

Earthly perfection is really deception. But the Law of the Lord is truly perfect.

When we invest our time and energy into longing to be like another person, we make them the standard of perfection. We lose sight of the fact that every human being and every human relationship is flawed. If human perfection was attainable, we wouldn’t need a Savior. Jesus Christ is the prototype. Join me in replacing the attention we give to the imperfect idols of this world with a deep affinity for walking in His ways.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children,” (Ephesians 5:1).
