When I was in the navy I had to get qualified, on a more advanced level, in my ability to use my gun. The course we had to take was designed to teach us how to do close quarters combat by teaching us to "clear" a building of any "threats". The catch is, the people who were acting as "threats" were no ordinary people, they were all ex-special forces. NONE of us stood a chance against these guys! We would be lined up in a mock building, getting ready to round a corner and these 'threats" would be waiting for us at the end of the hallway, where they would pick us off one at a time as we stepped around the corner. We learned quickly that we had a better chance of surviving the course if we used the person in front of us as a shield. It's not the bravest method but it was effective.

Ephesians 6:16, ...take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6 tells us about the armor we need to put on daily to protect us from being overtaken and defeated by the enemy. When you go into battle you are very intentional about the weapons you carry and the "armor" you wear. Faith is referred to as a shield and I think this is such beautiful imagery because shields have a unique role when it's used in battle. Its purpose is to protect a person from being injured or killed and it's used as a form of defense against an enemy. The shield is created to be strong and impenetrable, and something to hide behind when under attack.

When you are in battle your shield doesn't stay at home or even down by your side you place your shield in front of you, to protect you from "the flaming arrows of the evil one." We cannot be caught without our faith, without it we leave ourselves open to be attacked. We will believe every lie that is thrown at us. We will fall into every trap that is set before us. However, with faith every plan of the enemy is canceled, every road block the enemy puts before us is torn down, every lie the enemy tells us is extinguished by the truth of God's Word and there is not a plan the enemy can come up with that will succeed.
