We have so many longings in our hearts – longings for romance, for adventure, for someone to fulfill us. The world doesn’t take our longings and fulfill them; they do the exact opposite. The message we receive from the world tells us that our longings don’t matter. They are false expectations. They are unrealistic.

Even though it seems we have to hide these longings, Jesus comes and deepens them. We don’t have our hearts desires just because – we have them because God placed them there so He can fulfill them. Through the ache of waiting for “the one” He doesn’t try to erase our desire for romance. He carries us through it, He helps flex our faith muscle, and through the waiting He reveals Himself – the One person, the One God, the One true friend who is constant when everything else is not. When we are aching for an adventure, for our world to broaden beyond what we know now, He helps us remain our focus on Him. Knowing Him, being intimate, real, honest, free, and in the process of being healed by Him is the true adventure.

No matter where we find ourselves, God doesn’t shy away from the longings in our hearts. We have hearts that were made to desire to live with risk, with faith, with love, with passion as we pursue Jesus. We have desires that seem to never fade away or never be fulfilled, but we cannot forget that we have to allow Him to fulfill them in the way He sees fit. Even when we do see God fulfill our hearts desires, He’ll often show us that how we expect Him to is different from how He actually does. But that is the amazing, unfathomable part about Jesus – He comes through for His beloveds fiercely and passionately, in ways we least expect. He rejoices when we come and kneel to Him – the One who loves us with everything that He is.

As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you,” (Isaiah 62:5).
