Bah! Humbug! These were the words that described my attitude toward Christmas a few years ago. While everyone around me was joyfully shopping for gifts, making Christmas cookies or hosting parties, I was at home, lying on the floor and trying to fight back tears. The pain from a heart-wrenching breakup was taking its toll on every area of my life. Christmas, well, the sooner it went away, the sooner I hoped I’d feel less alone.

Have you ever had one of those holiday seasons?
You’re in the midst of suffering through the loss of a loved one, and it’s your first Christmas without them. Perhaps you’re far away from your family and can’t afford the trip to visit over the holidays. Maybe you’re grieving the end of a relationship, too. Whatever hardship you’re experiencing, you feel alone. But you’re not.

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. -John 8:12 (NIV)

When I attended my church’s Christmas Eve service that year, something inside me changed. Toward the end of service, the lights were turned out, and our entire congregation was silent as we lit our individual candles. Slowly, the room filled with an extraordinary light, and I was overcome with a feeling of peace and calm. While I was in a dark period of my life, Christ reminded me that only His light could lead me out of the darkness.

Is Jesus the light of your world?
If He’s not or you’re having trouble seeing the light, take comfort that this beautiful light represents His presence, guidance and protection—always, and it will never go out.

Is there someone in your life who is living in darkness? Do they know the true light?
As the light of our world, Jesus commands us:

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. -Matthew 5:16 (ESV)

If you live for Christ, your spirit will glow in His likeness—and others will notice. Let’s live in His light!
