I always wondered as a child, “How could God rest?” In Genesis, in the beginning, when He created everything and rested on the seventh day, why did an Almighty God need to rest? “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” I’ve heard the possibilities: maybe it was to give us an example, or it simply means that He stopped to enjoy His creation. But recently I was reading my favorite verse over again, and the Holy Spirit made a connection for me.

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. -Zephaniah 3:17 (KJV).

When God rests, He is resting in his love for us!

Imagine Him creating everything, and then taking an entire day to look at it all and rest in His love for us. Isn’t that amazing?! It makes sense now that the God who is Love itself can give us rest, as He tells Moses in Exodus and as Jesus says in Matthew.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. -Exodus 33:14 (KJV)

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. -Matthew 11:28-30

Will you take your day of rest farther than mere relaxation? Will you rest as He did, in His love for you, and in Your love for Him?
