Christmas is said to be the most wonderful time of the year, but maybe it’s not for you. Maybe it’s a time of sadness and loneliness, of grief and guilt, of hurt and despair. Maybe hearing Christmas carols and seeing people swap gifts brings back bad memories. But friend, while I do love Christmas and its traditions, we need to remember that Christmas is not about the Starbucks holiday drinks, the presents, and Elf. Christmas is about so much more.

The most extraordinary man came in the most unordinary way. He was heralded in by a multitude of angels and was sought out by wise men. He was born to a virgin and had an angel announce His coming. But, He did not come as a lightning bolt or a hurricane. He came as a crying baby, wrapped in cloth, and breathed His first breaths to a worn out mother and father. He lived as a human and was ridiculed, mocked, tortured, rejected, cheated, scorned, and persecuted. He came as a baby and He came to fulfill the mission of His Father – to redeem, triumph over sin, and establish peace.

Isaiah 9:6 states: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Christ is the Wonderful Counselor – He wants to comfort your anxious heart. He is the Mighty God – no problem is too big for His power to prevail over. He is the Everlasting Father – He protects and provides for you, His child. He is the Prince of Peace – He will give you an unexplainable peace when circumstances aren’t very peaceful.

He knows what you are going through this holiday season and the hard times you are facing. Turn to your Wonderful Counselor and rest in the arms of the Mighty God. He is our Everlasting Father and the greatest source of Peace. He came, not for His sake, but for ours. Bask in the true meaning of Christmas and there you will find joy. We know Him by many names, but He knows us as His own.
