"God, why did You make me this way?"

I’ll admit, I’ve asked this question a lot. Living in a society that is driven by money, beauty and material things, it’s easy to feel like we don’t measure up to who the world thinks we should be. Every time I walk down Comparison Road, I remember this beautiful truth: “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well,” (Psalm 139:14, ESV). Let’s picture snowflakes for a moment. Each one is formed with its own design—not one is the same. Like snowflakes, we were all created uniquely, wonderfully and perfectly by God. And we all have one thing in common: Each one of us was woven together in the depths of the earth in God’s image.

With that truth in mind, why would we ever question God’s unique design of us?

I’m guilty of it. I often wonder why God made me such an emotionally sensitive person. Why do the smallest of verbal jabs sting so much? I’ve prayed for the Spirit to make me stronger, less emotional and release those feelings to Him. And through those prayers, God directed a question back to me: What if I didn’t make you that way?

If He didn’t, I wouldn’t connect as deeply with my friends and family. I wouldn’t understand—on an emotional level—the hardships they were going through and how I could pray for them more specifically. Also, I’m a storyteller. Sharing and writing stories is in my blood. However, if I wasn’t sensitive to the feelings of the people I interviewed or couldn’t empathize with them, those stories wouldn’t come to life on the page. What flaws do you see in yourself? Think about who you’d be without them.

This Christmas, as you celebrate Jesus’ birth, remember the perfect life He would lead—a life we continue to follow. And know what you think are your flaws, the Lord views as His masterpiece.

For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Almost four years later, God called her back home to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she currently resides and works as a writer and editor.

Many things bring Lindsay joy these days, including fellowship with her friends, cheering on the Michigan State Spartans, the perfect cup of Earl Grey tea and planning a wedding with the amazing man God designed for her.
