As Christmas passes, we take Joy and Hope in our arms and turn to face the New Year ahead. I don’t think it's an accident that in our modern calendar, our celebration of the birth of Jesus comes right before this cultural time of self-reflection and vision casting. The Lord has set us up to enter the New Year exactly where we need to be: aware of His love.

The New Year is a time we reflect on what was and cultivate vision for what could be. Some of my favorite times with the Lord have been meditating on my dreams and His promises in anticipation of what could happen in the year to come. He is always faithful to help form the vision and inspire the plan. I am constantly challenged by how small my thinking can be. 

We’re sometimes afraid to dream, aren’t we? We’re afraid to call our day dreams the stuff of God’s destiny over our lives for fear of disappointment. We’re afraid to pray dangerous prayers and declare big things because — what if we’re wrong? What if God did that in the bible, but not today?

What if this year, as it says in Ephesians, we would be rooted and established in the Love we just celebrated at Christmas? And from that place of Love, we looked toward the New Year with confident expectation that we will experience of the fullness of God? 

No matter what lack we see in ourselves, He meets us where we are at without judgment. Real transformation can only happen in His presence -- it only comes from Love. 

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
