"We tend to use God instead of seek Him. We want God to do our bidding more than we want Him.”
-When the Pieces Don’t Fit, Glaphre Gilliland

The times that pass by are often referred to as seasons. As Christians, we tend to characterize these seasons as times of change. When we are desperately seeking after the Lord, ardently attending to His word day and night, we are within a season. When we resist the call of God in our lives and lose sight of the supremacy of the Kingdom of Heaven, we are also within a season.

In Psalm 51, King David is pleading for the Lord to be gracious towards him; David’s grief is heavy from his iniquity with Bathsheba. What is the basis of this plea? David knows that it is only the God of steadfast love and abundant mercies Who can redeem his transgressions. Let this sink in. We all fall short from the glory of God; I am so guilty of transparent wishing and selfishly intentioned prayers, rather than seeking the will of God to be accomplished.

Are we living life to glorify God, or are our eyes set upon the fleeting desires of our heart? Do we truly wish to chase after God or do we look to manipulate his omnipotence in our favor?

What separates the behavior Gilliland depicts from King David’s pleas is the intention of his words. Although he had chased lust, pleasure, and desire above God, David humbles himself before the Lord. Although he, like us, is a child born of sin, we are set right by a God delighting in the innermost truth, the true wisdom. When we feel the immensity of the weight of our sins, let us look towards the example of King David.

But I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage.”
-Psalm 55:16-18 (ESV)

Let us call out to God with broken and contrite hearts, and He will redeem.
