“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, ““Your God reigns”” (Isaiah 52:7, ESV). Last year, I was in a very different setting. My summer consisted of lengthy layovers and visiting places I had never been. The longest period where I was in one place was a seven week mission trip in Alaska. I can’t begin to sum up what the experience was like, but one aspect of the trip revolved around me reading my Bible every day. As much as I would like to say this is typical, it’s not. I think a lot of us wish to read our Bible every day, or even just more frequently, but we fail at doing so. I was twenty chapters or so from finishing Isaiah, which had quickly become one of my favorite books of the Bible, and was determined to read the rest. Just as I had done each day, I opened my bible and read the next chapter which was Isaiah 52. I can’t explain the sensation that passed over me other than it being God. “How beautiful upon the mountains…” The Alaskan landscape is gorgeous; whether climbing mountains in Juneau or driving up rocky cliffs to see glaciers on the other side of Kupreanof Island, I was surrounded by mountains. Did I mention I was afraid of heights? The sight of something so untouched, abundant in lush greenery, a picturesque view of expansive snowy peaks did not evoke fear in me, but rather brought forward the memory of this verse and the reason that I had traveled across the country to get there. Today, I am publically articulating the fact that I want to read my Bible every day. Not for any other reason than God speaks to us through this sacred text; I know its transformative powers and the ability to feel like whatever we read was tailor-made for us, exactly when we need to hear it. I challenge you as well to make this a goal, or to continue doing so. What truths will God speak into my life? I can only anticipate.
