"Do not be agitated by evildoers; do not envy those who do wrong. For they wither quickly like grass and wilt like tender green plants. Trust in the Lord and do what is good; dwell in the land and live securely. Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act, making your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like the noonday.” -Psalm 37:1-6

God is always gently turning our faces away from the noise of the world and back to Him. It’s a beautiful reminder when things get messy and out of control; He’s still there, right beside us. If the Lord of the universe, who calms storms, directs planets, and gives life, is with us, then why should we worry about anything?

However, we do worry and wonder and fret because the world is intimidating. Psalm 37 says that we shouldn’t be “agitated” by evildoers. They are loud and distracting, but they will not last. God always has the last word. The disorder of sin should not wobble our focus from the Father.

Instead, we should delight in the Lord, trusting that He is directing us down the best path. This relationship is two-sided. When you place your whole happiness in the Father, simply loving Him for who He is, He fulfills the deepest desire of your heart. This isn’t a material want or need, but that place inside of you that yearns to know your true worth, to be accepted and loved for who you are. The more you delight in the truth of heaven, the less the “truth” of this world will matter.

Ultimately, He is the one who is able to make your “righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like the noonday.” This is our greatest testimony: the pure, unburdened light of Christ shining brightly through us because our joy is so complete that it can’t be contained. Do not be overwhelmed by the darkness. Allow Him to turn your face back to the dawn.

Amanda Hertzler

Amanda lives in Wyomissing, PA with her husband and new beaglier puppy. When she is not working at her job in Human Resources, you could probably find her either hiding with a book and a large cup of tea, or dancing around her house singing whatever song happens to be in her head in that moment. She also enjoys running, baking, and hanging out with the crazy teens who actually trust her to be one of their youth group leaders.

Recently, Amanda has been learning more about what it means to pursue the true identity of who she is in Christ, rather than live under fear, inadequacy, or perfectionism. She's a bit of a slow learner, but thankfully there's lots of grace for that. She loves connecting with new people so please reach out with comments or questions.
