“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:4-10)

All of us were once dead, but God breathed life into our spiritual bones so that He could lavish the riches of His grace on us. What a wonderful gift that I take for granted so often. I believe that God wants to bring life to every part of our being, even those places that seem irredeemable. The power of Christ within us is able to heal all wounds, but only if we open ourselves.

I have the tendency to think that when I’ve dealt with a past hurt, it’s gone for good. I no longer need to talk about it or address it ever again. Unfortunately, that doesn’t usually work. My attempts to bandage the problem and forget about it only go so far. It’s not healed, it’s just scabbed over. It will never fully heal until the root is pulled up and the infection is cleared.

This is an uncomfortable process. It itches and burns. The tender touch of the loving healer can still feel abrasive on those areas that I’m so used to covering or hiding. But to walk in the “good works, which God prepared” for us, we must invite Him into all the dark corners of our spirit. Allow Him to erase the stench of death completely and fill every part of you with His life. Live in the freedom that His grace has already extended to you.
